Importing Discs

Bring the DVDs and music CDs you own into your Magpie library.

Before you start

Magpie copies DVD video discs and audio CDs. It reads the disc in a drive connected to the computer running Magpie Server, not the computer you open the console on. Blu-ray is not supported.

DVDs
Install MakeMKV from its makers on the computer running the server. If Magpie does not find it, give its path under Settings › Library › Disc Import.
Docker
The container sees a drive only once you pass the drive's devices into it and give the container's user access to them.

DVDs become MKV files; CDs become FLAC.

Copy a disc

  1. Put the disc in the drive.

Keep Overview or Library › Libraries open in the console. Magpie reads the disc and opens its review by itself. If it does not, choose Add to Library on the drive's row. If the row says Set Up Import, choose it and finish Disc Import in Settings first.

  2. Identify it and choose where it goes.

Search for the film or show, or for the album, and confirm the match, or choose Enter Details Manually. Then choose the library folder each title goes into.

  3. Choose what to keep.

The second step lists every title or track on the disc. Tick the ones to keep and say what each one is, such as a movie, an episode or an extra.

  4. Start the import.

Choose Start Import. You can leave the page.

Check

The drive's row reads Added to library, and the titles are in the library you chose.

While it copies

Titles not started yet can still be changed with Edit Pending Items.

Cancel Import stops it and keeps the titles already added. An import a restart stopped reads Import interrupted, and Retry Unfinished Items carries on from the last checked title.

Copy every disc you put in

Auto Import is off until you review its defaults under Settings › Library › Disc Import and choose Review and Enable Auto Import. It then copies an inserted disc only when its identity, content mapping and destination are unambiguous. Changing a default turns Auto Import off until you review and enable it again.

Your library stays as it is

Existing files are never replaced.

MakeMKV is separate software installed by you under its makers' terms; Magpie never ships it or reads and decrypts a DVD in its place. Magpie's CD reader is cd-paranoia, under the GNU GPL v3, and its source ships beside it.

If something does not work

The drive is not listed
Magpie lists the drives the server computer can see. Check the drive is connected to that computer, and in Docker that it is passed into the container.
A DVD says Set Up Import
Install MakeMKV, or give its path under Settings › Library › Disc Import.
Unsupported disc
Magpie copies DVD video discs and audio CDs only. A Blu-ray is identified and refused.
No matches
Try another title, or choose Enter Details Manually.
